Killarney Park Hotel

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Killarney Park Hotel is a five-star hotel located in the heart of Killarney, beside Killarney National Park. AltiGeo was appointed to complete a topographical survey, measured building survey, CAD drawings, and BIM model of the hotel and its grounds to support a major refurbishment project.
Survey Objective
The client required a coordinated survey dataset covering the hotel building, surrounding external areas, roofscape, and wider site context. As the hotel remained fully operational throughout the survey, the works had to be carefully planned around guests, staff, service areas, check-in/check-out times, and the general 24/7 operation of the hotel.
Methodology
External laser scanning was carried out using a Leica RTC360, with black-and-white targets used for geolocation. A drone survey with GCPs was also undertaken to capture roof areas, upper-level elements, and other areas that were not fully visible or accessible using terrestrial LiDAR alone.
The drone imagery was processed into a photogrammetric pointcloud and combined with the LiDAR survey data to create a coordinated survey dataset for the project.
Internal LiDAR Scanning
Internal scanning was undertaken using a combination of Leica RTC360 and Leica BLK2GO. The BLK2GO mobile scanner allowed the survey team to capture rooms and circulation areas quickly, which was especially useful where access windows were short and dependent on guest availability.
A timetable was agreed with hotel management to coordinate room access and ensure that all required areas were surveyed within the agreed programme. This required close coordination, as the hotel was in constant use and there was limited quiet time to complete surveys without affecting hotel operations.
CAD & BIM Production
The coordinated survey dataset was used by AltiGeo’s CAD and BIM team to produce accurate 2D CAD drawings and a BIM model of the existing hotel and grounds. The information provided a reliable as-built base for the design team to progress the refurbishment works.
